Teachers

I am preparing my mind and body for chaperoning a trip to Gatlinburg this weekend. I will be taking three 13 year old girls and a 17 year old girl to a youth rally. I will be the only adult. Deep breath.

The enormity of the responsibility, the lack of adult conversation and distraction, and the time with all females have turned my memory to school trips I took as a youth.

The highly anticipated sixth grade trip to Washington, DC must have been a nightmare for the teachers. Taking children who have never been away from home to a huge metropolis, spending the nights in a hotel which had doors that could be opened without their knowledge . . . It boggles the mind to think how stressful that must have been.

Good teachers are a rare breed. They give themselves sacrificially to people who mostly don’t appreciate them. I mean, who likes a boss that gives you work to take home? Who would want a job at which you are always incompetent? But isn’t that the life of a student?

Yet, these teachers throw themselves on the hot fire of students’ lives in order to make the world a better place. They teach reading and math so that students can participate in society. They teach economics and history so future citizens will make better decisions. They teach literature, art, and music so that the world will be a beautiful place.

Sometimes a young student recognizes the gift a teacher bestows, but often it isn’t until adulthood that the understanding and appreciation develop. Yet, the teachers continue in their selfless occupations hoping greatness will evolve in the minds of their charges.

Tell a teacher today how much you appreciate them. It will make their day.

And then say a prayer for me this weekend.

The student is not above the teacher, but everyone who is fully trained will be like their teacher. Luke 6:40 NIV
